A Positive Approach To Raising Happy, Healthy and Mature Teenagers Adolescence can be a time of great stress and turmoil—not only for kids going through it, but for their parents as well. It’s normal for teens to explore a new sense of freedom and to redefine the ways in which they relate to their parents, and that process can sometimes leave parents feeling powerless, alienated, or excluded from their children’s lives. These effects can be magnified even further in this modern age of social networks, cell phones, and constant digital distraction. This newly revised and updated edition of Positive Discipline for Teenagers shows parents how to build stronger bridges of communication with their children, break the destructive cycles of guilt and blame that occur in parent-teen power struggles, and work toward greater mutual respect with their adolescents. At the core of the Positive Discipline approach is the understanding that teens still need their parents, just in different ways—and by better understanding who their teens really are, parents can learn to encourage both their teens and themselves, and instill good judgment without being judgmental. The methods in this book work to build vital social and life skills through encouragement and empowerment—not punishment. Truly effective parenting is about connection before correction . Over the years, millions of parents have come to trust Jane Nelsen’s classic Positive Discipline series for its consistent, commonsense approach to raising happy, responsible kids. This new edition is filled with proven, effective methods for coping with such parenting challenges as: -Fostering truly honest discussions with your teen -Helping your teen handle the online world -Turning mistakes into opportunities -Keeping your sanity while raising your teen—and making sure your own teenage issues aren’t weighing you down -Teaching your teen how to pursue the goal that make them happy…and a few that make you happy too (like chores) -Making sure you’re on your teen’s side, and that they know that -Avoiding the pitfalls of excessive control and excessive permissiveness Review: Thank you so much for writing this book!!!! - Absolutely changed my perspective and my relationship with my son for the better! I was THAT parent. Grounding, taking away everything I could, yelling, lecturing, and getting NOWHERE. If anything, it was causing my son to rebel more. We had so much stress and anger in our house. This book gave me the tools and the understanding of what teenagers are really looking for, and how to prepare my son for the real world with actual life skills, instead of enabling him and making him feel inadequate. I have found that not only to do I feel empowered, but my son does too. I think the part that hit me the hardest was when the writer asks you to think about yourself as a teenager. Are you the same person now that you were then? Have you changed? Of course, I have. I was horrible as a teenager! But I figured it out, learned life lessons the hard way, and I am certainly a much better person than I was at 15! I highly recommend this for any parent struggling to understand and live with a teenager. I can't promise a miracle, but it is certainly worth a read! Review: Best book - I love this book it helped me so much with my daughter and it made me think twice before saying something I’ll regret later on.

It's helping
Our oldest son just turned 13... Oh boy! This book is really more about changing the parents then it is the teen. I have to keep my mind open while reading it. It's like the teen whisperer...lol! It's not really the teen, it's how you respond to them. That's hard for me. It makes since, but it's out of my comfort zone. I will say, our teen has opened up more to me, so I believe it's working. I'm only half way through the book and I hope it addresses when parents don't agree. My husband isn't "buying it" but is willing to support me at this point, because he agrees that what we've been doing so far isn't working. We're still struggling with disrespect at home and at school. He is aware that we are trying a new way to work together as a family, and a teen and parent contract helps keep us all on track. I often print things off their website and hang them in our bathroom as reminders. When things get really tough I look to these as a quick reference. It helps me remember and stay focused. I would recommend this book.

This book was recommended by a friend who is a marriage and family ...
This book was recommended by a friend who is a marriage and family counselor. Learned lots of great tips, but like any book, it needs to be read with a filter, as not all anecdotes and suggestions are completely applicable to each teenager. But the concepts are solid.

Must read for parents
This is a very in-depth book which every parent should read. In fact, I intend to come back to this book time and again to understand a lot of concepts which are very new and unique. My teenage son read this book and we had a lot of discussions on how we are going to handle issues and situations together. I would like to thank the authors for writing this book and sharing their knowledge with the world.
