I don't blame this problem on the machine, after all, I was playing a tape I recorded 50 years ago! I'm going to take the advice I read in another review. The reviewer said that because old tapes contain iron oxide, which causes the tape to stick together if it hasn't been played for a long time. His suggestion is to fast forward the tape to the end, then rewind it back to the beginning before playing it. The cassette player does not play in stereo, even with headphones plugged in - I ended up returning it for this reason. If you don't mind the lack of stereo, it's not a bad product for the price. The sound quality is decent, and it feels solidly built. Some reviewers have reported issues with tapes being eaten, but I did not experience this (I did do a few fast-forward/rewind cycles on my old cassettes to loosen them up before playing them). The one nitpick I have is that there is no auto-stop for FF/Rewind when it hits the end of the tape. As for the radio, I didn't try it so can't comment.
