"Active Listening", first developed by Rogers and Farson, is a therapeutic technique designed to promote positive change in the client. Active listening is a communication technique used in counselling, training and conflict resolution, which requires the listener to feed back what they hear to the speaker, by way of re-stating or paraphrasing what they have heard in their own words, to confirm what they have heard and moreover, to confirm the understanding of both parties. It continues to have a lasting influence to this day. Review: Self Healing - Great introduction to counselling skills Review: "If I want to help a man reduce his defensiveness ... - "If I want to help a man reduce his defensiveness and become more adaptive, I must try to reduce the threat of myself as his potential changer." (P.6) "When people are listened to sensitively they tend to listen to themselves with more care and make sure exactly what they are feeling and thinking." (P.4) "The question or challenge frequently is a masked expression of feelings or needs which the speaker is far more anxious to communicate than he is to have the surface questions answered. Because he cannot speak these feelings openly, the speaker must disguise them to himself and others in an acceptable form." (P.7)

I was hoping for something more solid
Lots of stereotypes in supporting their ideas with examples (stereotypes honestly put me off), points made with evidence from the 50s and focus on active listening from a business point of view. I was hoping for a therapeutic approach to listening, but this isn't it. However, it explains the concept well. This would be good for a business leader who does not have much time (it's a fast read) and needs to be reminded of the idea of listening to people in their team. I feel this is not the book to help me try build my listening skill because it lacks that level of detail, and it costs too much for what it is.

Definitely not worth it!
Ordered this book to help me with my academic assignment only to find it’s 25 pages long, not the 34 it states and isn’t worth the money! I hate leaving bad reviews but I’m now out of pocket and haven’t gained anything from this read!
