When National Geographic Adventure published an article in 2006 about the powerful antidepressant effects of ayahuasca, the piece received a phenomenal reader response. That article struck a chord with psychotherapist Rachel Harris, who had encountered many clients unresponsive to traditional therapy and antidepressant protocols. Used for more than 8,000 years in the desertcart rainforest, ayahuasca is a powerful and illegal psychedelic that has distressing gastrointestinal side effects. Yet Harris found many willing to try it, so deep was their suffering. Harris here shares her original research (the largest study of ayahuasca use in North America) into its effects on depression, anxiety, and PTSD, along with her own personal experiences. By detailing ayahuasca s risks and benefits, she aims to help those driven to investigate ayahuasca to do so safely and to give their psychological caregivers a template for transformative caring and healing." Review: Westerner psycholigist interpretation - I think this is a very useful book to both allay fears of people thinking of trying ayahuasca and inspire ideas regarding how to better integrate aya after ceremonies. The author is very sweet and honest and unpretentious. I feel there are some aspects that she doesnt quite understand, for example the use of tobacco in ceremonies, but then she doesn't pretend to be all-knowing and her own analysis is really quite useful. Really pleased to see attachment theory brought so central as I also used that as a framework for my own path with aya. Much thanks and gratitude Rachel for all the hard work and dedication in bringing this work together and demystifying (as much as is possible with an inherently mystical medicine!!) the therapeutic potential of aya. Aho!!!! Review: Essential Reading - Excellent. Intelligent and informative. Written by a professional Therapist, this work adds significant academic weight to the growing western understanding of the therapeutic benefits of this incredible traditional medicine.

OK. Bit too much psychobabble and not enough about ayahuasca

Brilliant.
I loved reading this book. As someone who is about to go on their first ayahuasca retreat, I've been reading everything I can about this plant medicine. This is by far the most helpful and informative one I've read.

Very well researched and a very good personal account
I found the book of great value before going to my first ayahuasca ceremony. I found very interesting what the author describes about her ontological crisis in regard to going from strict rationality to the world of spirituality, I think it takes courage to do that. Personally, I come from a science background and I think that ayahuasca can open up the doors of the unseen and basically change your point of view about what you previously believe or unbelieve. Although, more and more often I'm more confortable with the perspective of the shamans, I'm still interested in science and I think that ayahuasca might potentially open what Julian Jaynes called the bicameral mind, which is a whole new way to perceive and navigate in the world, which doesn't involve the prison of the rational thought.

Nice read
The research shed light on the integration part of plant medicine, from a western psychological perspective. A good entry to these unknown realms.
