What size drill is needed for attachment?

This plucker attachment requires a drill with 0,4" (10mm) or larger chuck. The shaft is 10mm in diameter. Minimum power - 500W, variable speed,110-220 volt.

I'd like to pluck in duck hunting camp before returninig home. Would this work with a good cordless drill?

The skin of hunted bird is already demaged, so plucking machine will keep ripping it. Also, to get a good result, you have to scald a bird before plucking it and it's recommended to start this process not later that 5 min after a bird was killed. So you have to pluck a bird as soon as possible after it was shot. This machine can help you to take off the feathers, but the skin won't look nice anyway. If it's OK for you, use a drill at law speed. Thank you for you question!

What temperature is better to scald quails and chickens?

For chickens: 140-149 F – 2,5-3min For quails: 153-158 F – 30-40 sec. Feather retention force depends on poultry’s age, feed, climate and other factors. Therefore, every time before massive slaughter, scalding temperature and duration should be chosen on a case-by-case basis. Scalding container should be big enough to keep the water temperature on the same level after you put a bird inside of it (at least 30l to scald one chicken or 20l to scald 7-10 quails). Stir the birds in the water for uniform scalding from all sides. If while plucking not all the feather removed, it is necessary to rise the temperature or increase the duration of scalding. If the skin damaged, it is necessary to decrease the temperature or reduce the time of scalding.

Can I pluck quails dry?

With scalding, feather removes better. Moreover, while plucking, wet feather does not disturb as much as dry one.

I used this defeatherer this past weekend on about 10 birds. It worked great but the feathers went everywhere! Also, since the birds were bled out and scalded first, there was water and blood flying EVERYWHERE with the feathers. It got all over me and my backyard where I was doing it. It wasn't until the last chicken that I realized that the defeatherer worked even better if I spun the drill attachment more slowly. If you do it slowly, it will defeather them very well without flinging water and blood all over yourself and your backyard. It tells you in the instructions how many RPMs to spin it but I ignored it. I should have paid better attention to that. It works amazingly. I'm VERY happy with my purchase and I'm glad I purchased this over anything else. If I had the money, sure, I'd buy a drum defeatherer because it would be much better and much less of a mess but for someone harvesting a few birds here or there, this gets the job done very well. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone doing small scale birds.
