How do you handle an encounter with Medusa on the New Jersey interstate? What's the best way to take down a minotaur? Become an expert on everything in Percy's world with this must-have guide to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Complete with interviews, puzzles, games, and original short stories by Rick Riordan. Review: Great Book! - Great Hardcover Book! Loved it! Review: a gift to fans - Personally, I was excited to see something interesting while I waited for the 5th Percy Jackson book to come out, but I'm also fairly cynical about what to expect. This inexpensive volume was a pleasant surprise, with three decent short stories, goofy interviews with characters, a map of Camp Half-Blood, a color insert section with pictures and profiles of the main characters, a crossword puzzle, word search and chart of the Olympian gods. I thought this was a fun treasure trove of odd materials -- quite interesting and enjoyable.

Good stories, value can be an issue
Prologue and Disclaimer: Having read books 1-4 of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, with the final book 5 ( The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 5) , which I just received and am reading now, YAY!) on order, and being a completist at heart (yes, I also bought the Tales of Beetle the bard (both versions! The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Collector's Edition (Offered Exclusively by Amazon) and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Standard Edition ) and the Artemis Fowl Files Artemis Fowl Files, The , I knew that I had to get this companion book for the Percy Jackson series as well. And since I also bought the other short story books, I knew going in that I'd be paying a premium for a hardcover book with less than 200 pages. But hey, it costs about as much as a ticket for a 2 hour movie, and lasted at least that long, so I'm not complaining! So, the book comes with 3 short stories, a few 2-3 page "interviews", 8 color portraits of characters from the book, a crossword puzzle and a wordsearch puzzle, plus about one-third of chapter 1 of book 5. Timelinewise, all 3 short stories occur between books 4 and 5, based on the age and knowledge of the characters involved. The first story involves Clarissa and Percy (a unique pairing, compared with the other books). I liked the dynamic between the two, but wasn't crazy about the way Clarissa seemed so depending on Percy, instead of being able to carry her own weight more. The second story was with Beckendorf (of Camp Haephestus) and Percy, later joined by Annabeth and Selina of Camp Aphrodite. Without going into too much detail, I wasn't crazy about the plausiblity of this story. I know, it's a fantasy book about greek gods, but the story had one of the characters reattach a mechanical head that was chewed off, back onto it's body, without tools, and get the robot working again, all in about an hour and a half. The third short story was the best of the bunch, and seemed almost like a missing chapter of book 4, since the repercussions of that story may affect book 5 (I haven't finished book 5 yet, so I don't know if it will). The story revolves around Percy, Thalia, and Nico, so if you know about those characters, you definitely know the significance of those three to the storyline. The interviews, color portraits, and puzzles were filler material, interesting to those who look for that stuff. The excerpt of book 5, namely, the part of Chapter 1, was short but tantalizingly informative. A budding potential romance, a prelude to war, and a bag of greek fire, what more can you wish for? I still have to say something about the price point for this book. The MSRP of this is a bit steep, even for a hardcover, when you compare it to the other companion/short story books (namely the Tales of Beetle the Bard and Artemis Fowl Files as comparison). Overall, 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend buying it if you are a completist and need to read it before reading book 5 (like me). UPDATE: 05/11/09 I've since read book 5 ( The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 5) ), and can unfortunately confirm that the final book makes no reference to the 3 short stories in this book. It's as if these short stories never existed. A shame, really, makes me have to think of the short stories as "what if" scenarios, as opposed to including them into the whole Percy Jackson timeline.

Entertaining Add-On
I'd recommend reading this book between books 4 and 5 of the original Percy Jackson series. It's fun to learn a little more about some of the side characters.

The Demigod Files by Rick Riordan is one of my favorite books ever
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Demigod Files by Rick Riordan is one of my favorite books ever. I love the never told, action-packed stories like this: Percy, Nico, and Thalia go to the underworld and try to retrieve the Sword of Hades from one of Kronos’s servants and end up fighting Iapetus the titan on the banks of the River Lethe. In the end, Percy drags the titan into the river and re-names him Bob, which I find funny because it is hilarious to re-name an immortal being “Bob.” (Also, it is a lame pun.) Additionally, I like the book because you can read the stories in 1-3 sittings. (Each story is about 30 pages.) I hope you like the book as much as I did! (written by Brendan, my 10-year-old son)

While the three short stories are entertaining the product is not worth the price.
The three short storieswe're interesting but less than a chapters worth of material. There were a few notes also less than chapter worth of material that was interviews with a couple characters. In all honesty if it wasn't for the fact that years ago when I read the series a couple times it always annoyed me that I didn't know the short stories that was referenced in a few places in the series and sequence series I wouldn't have bought this. This is something strictly for those who are collecting all of Rick Riordan's works. I also think that the stories do feel sort of out of place because they do not really refer to the rest of the series the flow is not quite as smooth as the Main works from the author. Each of the stories does have the feeling of a Percy Jackson book where he is thrown into an adventure and has to overcome a situation. It really was I think just a way to hold off readers back in the day while they waited for the fifth book to come out. I think that the price range for this book should be around $5 instead of twice that much. There is a crossword puzzle and a work van in the back of the book that can be printed out perhaps. I do enjoy the series as a whole and finally was able to scratch the itch to read the stories hear that was referenced in the next book and a few times in the later series.

Soddisfatta

Great combination of Short Stories
This book was really great. I have completed reading The Percy Jackson and The Heroes Of Olympus series, so it was a little difficult to read this book now, because this book was written between the fourth and fifth book of the Percy Jackson series. In this book their are wonderful short stories and all but when you already know what is going to happen then you are not so curious. Except that it was brilliant, people who have just read the fourth book should read this before going into the fifth book. People like me, who has read the complete series of Percy Jackson or even probably Heroes Of Olympus should also read this book cause it will make you remember the Good old normal days ( I mean Percy normal and Percy good). Amazon is really a great place to buy books, it is cheap and has a great delivery. So overall, this is a great book which contains: Clarisse and Percy' s rivalry, Percabeth moments and yeah, Bob the Titan's story.
