Q: What type of batteries do these use?

These little ones do not take batteries that I can see. You do not program these little guys, but use little cards to help with understanding coding.

Q: Is This a stand alone item or do you need other sets for these to work?

I bought this as a gift. Assumed it was an add on to the larder Coding Critter set. Also assumed that the critters in smaller set needed to match up with larger set. Ie. Dog & Puppy, Bunnies, Dinosaurs, Cat & kitten. It was something I read in description. Might want to check Learning Resources website.
