Beautiful Luffa, Family Memories, Tasty Food!
I bought these seeds over a year ago - I just didn't get around to planting them that year. But I did plant this year - 4 seeds - and 2 came up, which is pretty good for older seeds. I think I planted them in April or May, and they grew vigorously, bloomed profusely ... and at first had no fruits. But I just needed patience. I think the earlier blooms were male. In late July, suddenly there was a tiny gourd, the size of my pinkie - and within one week, the size of a turkey leg! Tonight (August 9) I see two more half-grown gourds, and several baby ones. It should be said, there is special meaning to me in these gourds - my dad grew them, and he passed away 29 years ago, and I haven't had them since. Our family uses them as a food. We harvest, cut off the splines, slice the spongy core into very thin cross-sections (1/16 inch), lightly salt the slices and allow the moisture to drain, then coat the slices in flour and pan-fry them. They are delicious, similar to potato chips. I have craved that taste for years now. Thank you so so much for this experience, and the happy way to remember my father.
