Interesting concept, but the book needed some work
I received a copy of The Complete Guide to Companion Planting last Christmas and only just finished it. The book deals with beneficial relationships between plants, such as one plant repelling insect pests of another, attracting predators that feed on pests, nitrogen fixing and more. The book was interesting, but there were a few problems. On pages 52 and the color photo X the book states that leafy plants thrive on oxygen. Those plants need more nitrogen than most plants, not oxygen. The author mentions lemon balm but not how aggressively it spreads (I know from personal experience). There is also a lot of general gardening advice early in the book, like how to make compost, do container gardening and building raised garden beds. None of this information is wrong, but it doesn't have much if anything to do with companion planting. Overall I'd say the book is worth keeping, and I intend to try some of these ideas.
