Review: Worked - Needed a replacement power supply for an old 486 I found in the basement. Had everything but the power supply. Worked as expected. Great that you can still buy an AT power supply when you need one. Figured I would need to buy used but glad I found new. Review: Great for older equipment - I have a home automation system that is almost twenty years old. Some of the components power supplies have failed recently and I have used this as a replacement and it installs easily and has all the right connectors. It was a perfect replacement. I thought I was going to have to throw my old system in the garbage but now it lives on. I even bought a spare one because one component hasnโt failed yet but itโs just a matter of time.

Just over 4 months and the power supply is dead.
I just got this power supply a little over 4 months ago. However, I really didn't start using it until about a month ago when I put together a new old-stock motherboard and the accesories to go along with it. Went to boot it up this evening to load some software and there is no signs of life. Got out my volt meter and I'm not getting +5 or +12 on the respected pins. I can't recommend this product based on the amound of time it's been used. The first thing I noticed when I received this power supply is how light it is compared to the original power supply I had from 30 years ago. It was as if there were nothing inside of the case.

25 year old DOS machine conroller, still runs!
Replaced a power supply that gave up after 25 years! The new one was an exact replacement and 20 minutes later the system was back up, hopefully for another 25 years!

Good if you enjoy burning out components!
I was really hoping to write a good review for this product, but I can't recommend it for reasons I'll explain below. I bought this AT power supply to revive and test some old system boards. There's no question that the unit provides power, but it's highly unstable. 2 of the 3 boards I tested with this power supply were fried. I suspected the age of the board and the components to be the cause, as 20+ year old mainboards are prone to numerous points of failure. That's when I tried a known good working board as a control to see what would happen. Long story short, I ended up frying a floppy disk emulator but the voltage regulators on the board managed to keep that board working. I'm not an electrician by any means but I noticed the gauge of the wire used in this power supply is 18AWG. I've seen 22 or 20 used in other (better quality) power supplies, and I'm pretty sure a thinner wire means less resistance, less current capacity and more possibility to burn up which in an AT configuration could mean smoke and sparks. Anyway, if you're hoping to revive an older unit, my suggestion would be to get an ATX power supply and convert it to AT with the proper adapter.

It works but the fan runs louder.
The fan is much louder than the original AT power supply from 1998. But it appears to be working OK in the system.
