This book combines stunning visuals with insightful commentary, making it an essential addition to any art lover's collection. ## Description An icon of 1980s New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) first made his name under the graffiti tag “SAMO,” before establishing his studio practice and catapulting to fast fame at the age of 20. Although his career lasted barely a decade, he remains a cult figure of artistic social commentary, and a trailblazer in the mediation of graffiti and gallery art. Basquiat’s work drew upon diverse sources and media to create an original and urgent artistic vocabulary, biting with critique against structures of power and racism. His practice merged abstraction and figuration, poetry and painting, while his influences spanned Greek, Roman, and African art, French poetry, jazz, and the work of artistic contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly. The results are vivid, visceral mixtures of words, African emblems, cartoonish figures, daubs of bold color, and beyond. This book presents Basquiat’s short but prolific career, his unique style, and his profound engagement with ever-relevant issues of integration and segregation, poverty and wealth. To look at, not to flip." ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ SONG FOR THE GENIUS CHILD *by C***E on June 22, 2015* Jean- Michel Basquiat's now world famous art had its gestation in the pseudonym SAMO [an acronym and a corrupted shortening of the phrase "SAMe OLd S***"] with which he signed his spray painted sayings on walls and buildings in SoHo.[Manhattan,N.Y.] According to to the author, Leonhard Emmerling---"In essence, the SAMO religion was a retort against the way in which society uses values and ideals, an art product tailored to a starched society". The following are some of Basquiat's SAMO musings and some of my own interjected: "SAMO as announcing the unheroic gringo pilot, Paul Tibbets dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima from the plane "AnolaGay". "SAMO as hearing the voice of Charlie Parker-- They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But man, there's no boundary line to art"." SAMO as suggesting Egypt is in Africa". "SAMO as a John Coltrane country preacher cool". "SAMO like works of art, people are suppressed". SAMO as those who fear the truth oppose its exposure". "SAMO as jazz is the music of Americans who were not allowed to be Americans"." SAMO as seeing Miles Davis as a "prince of light" and not "darkness".SAMO as suggesting death is a passage, a door into a different form of existence". SAMO as pledging to avenge the criminal triumph of falsehood over truth". As the writer,Franklin Sirmans states in his essay "In the Cipher"[ Basquiat and Hip-Hop Culture]: As "Gringo Pilot suggest,Basquiat's poetics were acutely political and unabashedly direct in their commentary on colonialism, racism, and class warfare". This critical awareness in the art of Basquiat is what the film-"Basquiat" by Julian Schnabel obfuscates. ## Frequently Bought Together - Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Explosive Force of the Streets - Jean-Michel Basquiat. 40th Ed. - Andy Warhol: Commerce into Art --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://lithuania.desertcart.com/products/21681746-basquiat](https://lithuania.desertcart.com/products/21681746-basquiat) --- *Product available on Desertcart Lithuania* *Store origin: LT* *Last updated: 2026-10-13*
