"This is a firstโclass resource for students who wish to improve their drawing skills. A must for those who want to advance their visual communication" Simon Pattison, York St John University "โฆanother brilliant teaching and learning recourse by LKP" Nooshin Akrami, University of Bolton "Extremely approachable โ the illustrations are not too polished and should be achievable for most students. Excellent contemporary objects/interiors/architecture used as drawn examples all clearly labelled so that students can research them further. The book is extremely well organized and laid out with clear sections, labels, and discrete tasks" Tom Nelson, Coventry School of Art and Design Stephanie Travis' new book teaches architecture and interior design students all they need to know about sketching. With the advancement of technology, the debate surrounding hand drawing versus computerโgenerated imagery has become a hot topic. Having grown up with computers, today's interior design and architecture students are extremely adept at creating computer imagery, but often lack confidence in their freehand sketching skills, or do not know how to sketch at all. Sketching, and the careful observation that it entails, is essential for the successful development of the next generation of designers whether they practice architecture, interior or product design. Fortyโfive stepโbyโstep exercises take the student from the simple threeโdimensional forms of furniture, to interiors, to complex building exteriors, and cityscapes. Technical topics covered include tools, line weights, perspective, proportion, composition, shading, serial views, and context. Exercises are illustrated with beautiful sketches specially created by the author. Sketching for Architecture + Interior Design is an indispensable and practical guide for students wishing to master the art of looking and sketching. To quote Travis "drawing is truly a tool for seeing. To draw an object, interior or building, you have to look at the subject in a new way. The sketching process is a means of expanding one's creativity and awakening the senses." Review: Great Book! - Such a helpful book! This book significantly improved my sketching skills and is perfect for designers of all levels. The exercises are accessible and adaptable, no matter your experience. I especially love all the hand-drawn sketchesโso refreshing compared to the digital-heavy focus of many design programs today. This book truly helped me feel more confident and excited in my work. Review: Loved this book! - Loved this book! I am a big fan of sketching and hand drawing over computer programs. While I do understand the importance of computers in design, I also understand the importance of being able to sketch out an idea on the fly and learning to see in a new way, especially for a visual industry. Sketching has almost becoming a lost art, and this book is perfect for students, design professionals, as well as those who just want to learn to sketch and see things in a new light. The book is broken up into 3 chapters (furniture + lighting, interiors, architecture) with multiple drawing techniques in each chapter that emphasize the process. With itโs simple approach, easy to follow instructions and plenty of drawing examples, I wish this book would have been available when I was in school instead of the wordy, technical books that were available. Itโs a visual book, for a visual concept that is done beautifully.

Great book for techniques and learning how to think through sketching
I am an interior designer who graduated from interior design program a few years ago and who is returning to the field after a break. This book has been very helpful in refreshing my sketching. There's nothing like making a quick sketch of something you have in mind to communicate one's idea! I got a ton of ideas of how to quickly sketch a space or a product from this book and a refresher on perspectives! This book also challenges one to think though sketching: thinking about creating 'accidental' negative space, play of light and shadows, highlighting viewpoints. And I can't say enough about teaching how to draw people quickly, effortlessly and in a way that looks great. Stephanie draws on examples of great architecture and it's a great inspiration. Definitely recommend this book whether you are a student, or already a designer!

Amazingly Clear and Easy to Follow
I used this book for my modern architecture and design class, and it helped improve my sketches and drawing skills. Each exercise has a number of steps that break down a complex final sketch into easier parts. This book contains chapters of furniture and lighting, interiors, and architecture. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn or improve their architecture and interior design sketching skills.

Great one to simplify Sketching. Love it ๐
..This book was an essential resource during my graduate studies in Interior Architecture. It clearly explains how sketching is not merely a representational tool, but a thinking process that supports spatial exploration and conceptual clarity. What I appreciated most is how it bridges architecture and interior design, emphasizing observation, proportion, and spatial understanding rather than stylistic drawing. The exercises and visual examples make it accessible while still intellectually grounded. I continue to recommend this book to my students, as it strengthens both design thinking and visual communication skills. Highly recommended for design students and educators alike.

Accessible, inviting, and engaging
This is exactly what I wanted: an architect's approach to seeing and sketching. Stephanie Travis focuses on the process rather than the end productโI appreciate this the most. I love how she folds in references to recognized structures; this alone is a springboard to discovering architects and interior designers. This book is for students: it is a guide meant to be worked through from beginning to end. It's an activity book, if you like; you will be filling up a sketchbook of your exercises. She starts you off drawing in pen so that you don't get all tied up on the end product. I like how each lessons are small, in digestible chunks.

The best, easy to follow, and affordable sketching book!
I bought this book for my very fist sketching class in interior architecture school and it was the best purchase I have ever made. This book is so easy to follow and comes with so many exercises. It is also a great tool to draw diagrams when studying buildings and working on precedents. It is very affordable too. I used it in my 1st semester and I had used it again for my 3rd semester in interior architecture school. I highly recommend this book to students who are learning sketching and for the faculty, as it is a great tool to use for lectures

Very comprehensive book!
The book is fantastic, detailed and simple to understand, however it arrived unprotected and in very poor condition, the side seemed to be dirty and there were marks all over it.

Great book for architecture students and anyone wanting to improve their skills.
This is an amazing guide to not just sketching, but observing and imagining through sketching. I am at the end of the book now, been doing all exercises everyday for the past couple of months, and must say, my sketching has improved. I went to architecture school, and they didn't teach sketching the way Stephanie does. A great effort on her part. The language is very simple and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring architects or interior designers or anyone who wishes to brush up their existing sketching skills.
