I can breathe inside again (GREAT for pets!!)
I bought this air filter unit in 2015 and have run it just about 24 hours every day since (aside from cleaning and moving). After 6+ years this filter still works great, as long as you maintain it properly and have reasonable expectations. I have severe environmental allergies but live in a house with 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 4 house rabbits that eat hay as a main staple of their diet. This combo resulted in me waking up throughout the night and unable to breathe in the mornings especially. It was a miserable existence. I chose this filter after much consideration and comparison to other Honeywells, ultimately because the filters are reusable. This cuts down on excess waste from disposable filters, and saves money in the long run. The reusable filters are very easy to clean - just remove, rinse, soak in a little soapy water, rinse, allow to dry completely. I try to clean my filters at least monthly, and 6 years later they're still working. The difference in air quality after just an hour in a room is pretty impressive; the air just feels cleaner and I'm able to breathe like a normal human. Just note this is not a HEPA rated filter, guys. If you're expecting HEPA grade filtered air, pass on this one and buy a HEPA air filter. I have found this unit works great at removing allergens, dander, animal hair, dust, etc from the air, but it is not as effective with smaller particles like smoke (it filters smoke, but not 100%). I included an image of common airborne particle sizes for reference. The specs on the filter state 1 micrometer as the smallest particle size captured.

A helping hand in house cleaning!
I originally became interested in purchasing an air purifier in hopes that something, anything, would help with the heavy dust that accumulates in our bedroom. I did a lot of research before purchasing the Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower Quiet Air Purifier, but in the end this model seemed to meet all of our needs and was in our budget. Before you purchase this model, or anything air purifier, please do some research on ionic air purifiers as they alter the ozone levels which may pose some health risks. This is a personal decision, but I think it is important for consumers to educate themselves before deciding to purchase any air purifier. On arrival, the model was in the box ready to go, no putting pieces together- just unpack and plug in. The instructions on operating and cleaning the unit are very clear and to the point. The instructions will tell you to place the model away from the wall, this is due to the fact that the model pulls in all of this dirt, dust, and dander which can quickly accumulate on your walls. We did not place the unit as far away from the wall as directed due to space issues, and sure enough big black patches around the unit. We continue to use the purifier in the same spot, but we are more adamant about wiping down the surrounding wall space. Once the unit has been running for awhile, you will notice a very distinct smell in the room and surrounding areas. I would not say the smell is "bad", just strong. If you are super sensitive to smells I recommend placing the unit in your garage and running it for a few hours. The odor quickly fades (it was gone within 6 hours for us) and has never returned. The instructions say it will take a few days to notice any difference in your home and that you have to give the unit time to "work". I am not sure how true this is, and although I did not keep track of the days I did notice a decrease in pet dander and dust. Since our cat sleeps on our bed, pet dander was a huge issue for us and I was very relieved to see that the unit does indeed pick up these particles. I do however want to add that this purifier does not ELIMINATE anything, we still have dust, cat hair, etc. floating around- but I have been able to dust every 3 or so days instead of everyday! I keep the unit on high most of the day and night, often using the oscillating feature. This unit on high will feel like a small room fan. In fact, it works so much like a fan that we often find ourselves turning off our ceiling fan (yep, even on hot days) because it gets much too cold with both of them running. The unit is not silent, but it is not obnoxiously loud either. It sounds much like a fan, and we enjoy the white noise while we sleep. We have not experienced any clicking or extremely loud noises like others have...perhaps we just got lucky or they have defective models? Either way, if you are looking for a unit that is silent, you will not find it here. The unit comes with an "indicator" light which is suppose to tell you when it is time to clean the permanent filters. We did not want to worry about purchasing filters all of the time, so this sounded perfect to us! Unfortunately, the light does not seem to indicate a need for cleaning, even when it clearly needs it. After about a month of constant use, I noticed dust and other particles becoming heavier in our room. I immediately checked the light thinking perhaps the filter was dirty, however the light remained off. I did a quick check, just in case, and found that the filters were filthy. Fortunately, the filters are easy to remove and clean! When cleaning your filters, please turn off the unit and unplug it! This is important! The manual suggests running water over the filters, however I found a quick vacuuming of them worked just fine and only took about five minutes! Once you see the amount of dust and dirt your purifier has picked up you will be oh so thankful you purchased a purifier!

Buy this!
I bought this to replace the older version I purchased probably 16 years ago. The old one still worked perfectly but the filters became difficult to find and I was spending $70 each filter change because they were rare (I guess). At the price this one will pay for itself in a year of not buying filters for the old one. So far it works just as great (even quieter) than the old one. It runs 24/7 at my house. Of course I donโt yet know if it will last 16+ years but hope so! Helps keep my house fresh and dust and dog hair free(er).

Lots of airflow, very quiet, sips energy
Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower Quiet Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, Black The HFD-120-Q is a very quiet unit. I have tried HEPA and HEPA-style filters in the past, as well as Ionizers. They are either noisy, ineffective, or both. The HFD-120-Q is very quiet and flows a lot of air even at the low speed. I find myself using the medium setting the most, and it has enough power to flow air across my entire house. The power consumption is advertised as 43W, but I used my Cyberpower UPS meter to check it and it registered only 36W. This was in the low, medium, and high settings which suggests it uses some type of resistive setup to reduce the fan speed for low and medium settings. I wouldn't recommend keeping it right next to you as you sleep, because it isn't that quiet. It is quiet enough to keep it outside in the hallway as you sleep. There are 2 types of filters on the machine. One is a foam pre-filter, and there are 2 IFD filters that are washable. The ionizer charges pollen and dust so that it can be easily cleaned up rather than airborne. I just know that with seasonal allergies, the histamine effects are significantly reduced when I keep the HFD-120-Q active. I use it for my household and one person commented that it must have cost quite a bit based on the build quality. I also noticed that the HFD-120-Q is built rather well. The soft-touch electronic controls make it seem like a new digital appliance rather than an old mechanical device. The power button turns on at the full speed setting briefly as it goes into the low setting. Each click raises the speed one notch until it shuts off. The oscillation button is also an electronic soft-touch button. One reviewer said that the air is very cold, and I found that to be true. It just moves a great deal of air, and is able to clear up my allergies within minutes. Overall: 5/5 stars, energy saver at 36W, filters a lot of air, runs very quiet, and uses washable filters

Cannot recommend enough. Lasted me 9 tough years and still going.
I don't often write reviews, but I had to for this product. I purchased this air purifier 9 years ago in 2008 to help with an apartment that just seemed to create dust out of thin air. It helped immensely. Since then it has survived a multitude of bumpy moves with me, including a road trip across the country, and then some. I even had it in storage for a good year and a half, and when I decided to clean it and plug it back in, it's still works like the first day I bought it. It definitely does what its supposed to do. Years ago I had a curious and skeptical roommate hold a burger behind the fan while he sniffed the "purified" air that came out the front. Sure enough, he could barely smell the burger. I cannot recommend this product enough. I can't think of anything I've ever purchased that's lasted me this long and worked so well. The inner filters are easy to clean, but the foam is a bit of a pain. I just saw that they have cheap foam replacements for $8. Done! The front of the filter also needs cleaning once in a while (very seldom), and that gets a little heinous - I recommend q-tips with the two different sized ends. The purifier is also super, super quiet. Seriously, after 9 years, on its highest setting it's still quieter than most white noise machines. If I could get some kind of commission, I would market this product all over the place. What brought me here today is just that I'm looking to purchase another one to keep in a bedroom.

Very Effective with Woodstove and Forest Fire Smoke
I have three of these. One is on loan. We have been under a smoke hazard warning for about a month from the huge forest fires around us. Visibility is often less than a mile. Many days, the air is rated in the "hazardous" range. The good news is that we aren't threatened by fire locally--at least not at this time. These filters WORK! I do have the carbon pre-filters in. I have one running on each floor. The air in the house is.wonderful. Having to go outside to do something is not so wonderful. I bought a third unit rather than call back the one I have on loan because he needs.to be able to breathe as.well. It takes about 24 hours to completely clean the air on a floor--air that was bad enough to make you cough. My original review--I heat with a woodstove. It has been a VERY long winter. There have been no breaks to really get the house aired out. Although I have very little dust, the particles in the little bit of smoke that leaks out were starting to make me cough. I ordered one of these aircleaners and put it next to the woodstove. The difference was noticable within a few hours. I ordered a second one for upstairs. My cough is completely gone. You can hear the fan, but it isn't an annoying fan noise. It really moves the air. As soon as we get a few warm days, I will be changing the fiberglass gasket on the stove and tightening the stove up. I am sure these cleaners will be just as effective on the spring pollen and the dust of summer.

Wonderful machine that will reduce the overall dust in your house.
This is a wonderful machine. The amount of dust the machine picks up that gets trapped in its filters is amazing. Moreover, the internal filters are also charged and help remove smells. We went from dusting practically every day to dusting once, maybe twice a week. The noise level of the machine is low, medium to high, depending on the setting. We put it on medium and we're happy with it. It is not noticeable when watching movies for example. However, you do notice how quiet things get when you turn it off. The oscillating feature is great and should be used as it sucks in more dust that way. The filters are reuseable. We have a blower than we use to blow away the dust. I have only washed the inner filters once. Overall, we are very happy with the machine and may buy another.

Noticable reduction in allergy symptoms
Every time we use this we see a noticeable reduction in our allergy symptoms. The air feels better and I wake up at night much less with gunk clogging my nostrils. We used to have a pretty bad time during allergy season. Now its not bad at all thanks to the air filtration this tower provides. I highly recommend it to anyone who has allergies or is sensitive to air quality. It is a little loud at the highest setting, but nothing too extreme. At the middle setting the sound level is alright, and at the lowest its quite quiet. I also quite like the reusable filters. Simply rinse thoroughly, leave to dry for a few hours, then put them back in. Great value.

Pretty quiet on low, and does capture particles in air
This model is a very big improvement on the HFD-010, which is another Honeywell model using electrostatic filter. The HFD-010 is loud, and its filter is poorly made; it has large gaps in between the filter housing, therefore causing lots of unfiltered particles to enter the blower. The new HFD-120-Q on the other hand, has two newly designed electrostatic filters, all comes with rubber strips on the sides for a better seal. To be fair even with all the seal, trace amount of particle can still be found passing the filter, but compares to the old model it is a big improvement. The new model uses a single button for speed control, and another button for oscillation. The noise is at the lowest on low setting; mostly the sound of moving air would be heard, and the rotor makes minimal amount of noise. The oscillation feature is a good addition for an air purifier; it will clear out stale air pockets around the room, and keeps the air circulating. The noise level is also minimal, unlike some of the tower fan, which produces an unbearable whining sound. The filters do capture quite a lot of fine particles, and they can be cleaned easily through washing. The pre filter comes with two varieties; one is a reusable foam filter, and other is a disposable activated carbon filter. The carbon filter claims to remove some of the odors in the house, however I didn't notice too much of a change after using it for a while. The new unit might produce a strong plastic smell when is first used, but after a few days it will start to dissipate. There might be trace amount of ozone smell as well, but you have to be very close to the air vent to smell it. Overall, this unit does a decent job on capturing air-borne particles, it won't out shine the true HEPA units, but with regular cleaning its efficiency will not deteriorate (as all HEPA unit experience), and you don't have to worry about replacing the filters (if you use the reusable pre filter instead of the carbon one) .

Strong odor fighting and air cleaning
The pre-filter chemical treatment + the ozone production are shocking initially. The HFD140 model is essentially the same product without the pre-filter and a lighter/green motor? If that version can run without a pre-filter I do not see why you could not just slowly acclimate to the new smell by running low fan speeds without the pre-filter? I ran at full speed with the pre-filter and found I got used to the new smell pretty quickly. I also noticed that some things smell better thanks to cancelling out odors from the smokers next door. I almost wish it made more noise at max speed, it could be a nice white noise generator in the bedroom since the sound it makes is very 'windy' instead of 'flappy' due to the tower design. The only knock is you have to throw the whole air cleaner out if you damage the electrostatic washable filters as there is none available on the market.
