KWV has 72 growers from every region of the Western Cape so it has unrivalled access to all of South Africa's wine regions and grape varietals, from cool climate Walker Bay Sauvignon to hot and arid Swartland Shiraz. Its winemakers work closely with the vineyards and the results shine a light on South Africa's amazing regional strengths. The winemaking team champions South African classics and off-beat varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Verdelho, Cinsault, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo and Malbec. The team's methods are innovative too: KWV has pioneered and patented technology to produce sulphur-free wines using honey bush and Rooibos tea bark (Earth Essence range). Soil in the Western Cape comprises ancient (350 million to 500 million years old) weathered soils of alluvial and volcanic origin. The alluvial soils are from both glacial and marine deposits. Some of the origins of the weathered soils are Table ain Sandstone, Granite and Malmesbury Shale. These have eroded over millennia and are now generally clay rich loam soils, which are most desirable for their ability to retain water for during summer months. arth's Essence is the result of a patented process that marries two completely natural elements of nature to create an exciting and entirely new wine category. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, de-stemmed and crushed into the fermentation tanks. In order to keep the wine sulphur free, 100% of the blend is fermented and matured with an extract from the indigenous South African Rooibos (Fabaceae family species, Asplathus) and Honey bush (Cyclopia) s. The extract contains high levels of antioxidants that act as a natural preservative against oxidation and spoilage.
